Pakistani, Iranian top diplomats hold 2nd call in 2 days amid push for 2nd round of US-Iran talks

KARACHI / ISTANBUL

Pakistani and Iranian top diplomats spoke by phone Monday, the second such call in as many days, amid a push for the second round of US-Iran talks to end the war.

Ishaq Dar spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to a brief statement by the Pakistani Foreign Ministry.

Dar “emphasized the importance of continued dialogue and engagement at the earliest to resolve all pending issues in order to promote regional peace and stability,” the statement said.

The call came as the US team, led by Vice President JD Vance, left reportedly for Pakistan to hold talks with the Iranian side, which has yet to officially announce its participation in the possible second round of negotiations.

Tehran was yet to release details of Araghchi’s call with Dar.

Dar and Araghchi held a similar call on Sunday as US “advance” teams began to land in Islamabad.

Pakistan hosted the first round of US-Iran talks between April 11 and 12 after securing a 14-day ceasefire on April 08, which is set to expire by dawn on Wednesday this week.

Islamabad is also expecting “positive development soon” regarding the Strait of Hormuz following a call from army chief Asim Munir to US President Donald Trump, Pakistani government sources told Anadolu on Monday.

The second round of talks between the US and Iran is expected any time soon in the Pakistani capital.

The waterway has been lying nearly closed since the US and Israel initiated their attacks on Iran on Feb. 28.

Tehran declared the strait open on Friday but closed it a day later after Trump announced that the blockade of Iranian ports would continue, and on Sunday, the American forces detained one Iranian cargo ship after they opened fire and boarded it.

Iranian authorities have demanded the lifting of the US blockade of Iranian ports.

Earlier, Pakistani sources said Iranians are expected to reach Islamabad on Tuesday.
