Greek football club Olympiacos beat England’s Aston Villa 2-0 (6-2 on aggregate) on Thursday to play Italy’s Fiorentina in the 2024 UEFA Europa Conference League final in Athens.
The hosts’ Moroccan forward Ayoub El Kaabi scored a double against Aston Villa at Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus to secure his team’s victory.
Olympiacos and Fiorentina will be vying for the third-tier Europa Conference League title on May 29 at Athens’ newly-built AEK Arena.
Fiorentina on Wednesday advanced to their second straight Europa Conference League final after a 4-3 aggregate win against Belgium’s Club Brugge. Last season, Fiorentina were beaten in the final by English opponents West Ham United 2-1 in Prague.
The Europa Conference League was inaugurated in the 2021-22 season. Roma were the 2022 champions and West Ham were the defending winners.
Meanwhile, Olympiacos have been through their first European final after eliminating the tournament’s favorites, Aston Villa.
AEK Arena, which was opened in 2022, is home to AEK Athens and also stages international home games of the Greek national team.
