ATHENS

Most Greeks cut spending on food and basic necessities as the cost of living continues to soar, local media reported on Sunday.

Reporting on a recent survey by the Union of Working Customers of Greece, Avgi daily said over 55% of Greeks reduced spending on food, and more than 65% had to cut spending on basic necessities.

According to the survey, 60% of Greeks declared they are unable to afford even one week of vacation per year.

Significant hikes in the prices of foodstuffs, including meat, eggs, bread, and dairy products, have forced Greeks to seek cheaper options like supermarket brands, it added.

Against this background, the daily argued, living standards in Greece have fallen profoundly.
