Head coach Ruben Amorim acknowledged on Tuesday Manchester United are at risk of relegation after suffering their fourth defeat in five Premier League games.

“That is really clear. It’s one of the most difficult moments in the history of Man Utd and we have to address it with honesty,” Amorim said after home defeat against Newcastle United on Monday.

“It is a really difficult moment, one of the more difficult moments in the history of Manchester United and we have to address it with honesty,” he added.

The Portuguese manager said it was also his fault that the team was not improving, adding: “It is a little bit lost in this moment and it is a bit embarrassing to be Manchester United coach and lose a lot of games.”

Newcastle defeat was Manchester’s fifth Premier League loss in December. The Red Devils have not suffered five defeats in the same month since September 1962.

United suffered three consecutive home league defeats for the first time since February 1979, and lost three consecutive Premier League games in the same season for the first time since December 2015.

Amorim, 39, was appointed to replace Dutch manager Erik ten Hag until June 2027.

Manchester United are 14th in the standings with 22 points from 19 games, only seven points from the relegation zone.
