Luxembourg’s 3-party ruling coalition loses majority in Sunday’s election

Luxembourg’s three-party coalition, led by Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, has lost its majority in the parliament following Sunday’s general election, according to the country’s election body.

Some 195,000 Luxembourg citizens were eligible to cast their votes at more than 700 polling stations in the election which saw 87% turnout, a 3% decrease from the previous elections.

Conservative Christian Social People’s (CSV) Party will likely return to power after the coalition government lost its majority in the 60-seat Chamber of Deputies, Luxembourg Times reported.

The CSV came out top, securing 29% of the votes, while the three-party coalition of Liberals, Socialists, and Greens fell to 29 seats in the parliament, meaning an end to the coalition which had been in power since 2013.

The CSV was followed by the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) with 18.91% and the Democratic Party (DP) with 18.70% of votes. Greens could only get 8.5% of votes.

The Chamber of Deputies holds proportional representation in four multi-member constituencies – nine in the North constituency, seven in the East, 23 in the South, and 21 in the Center.
