Latvia will start work on the joint use of the Paldiski liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Estonia to strengthen the country’s natural gas supply security, according to the Latvian Ministry of Climate and Energy on Thursday.
In the written statement from the Ministry, they explained the rationale for opting not to build a LNG terminal in the country, given that it would be commercially unfeasible and the fact that access can be arranged to the Paldiski LNG terminal in Estonia, which is under construction.
Two neighboring LNG terminals have already been established in Lithuania and Finland, while established gas infrastructure in the Baltics also includes a natural gas pipeline between Lithuania and Poland as well as the Inkoo LNG terminal in Finland.
‘The Ministry of Climate and Energy will start work on arranging access for the joint use of the Paldiski LNG terminal in Estonia with a view to strengthening the security of Latvia’s natural gas supply,’ the statement read.
