The 5th World Nomad Games in Astana is showcasing Kazakhstan’s rich cultural tapestry, rooted in ancient Turkic traditions.
Running from Sept. 8-14, the six-day event celebrates Kazakhstan’s heritage through music, dance, and traditional attire, offering a vivid portrayal of the nomadic lifestyle that has shaped the nation.
At the event, concerts feature a range of traditional instruments. The double-stringed dombra, a central instrument in Kazakh music, and the jetigen, along with bowed instruments like the kopuz, are prominently featured. The dombra is celebrated as Kazakhstan’s national instrument, while the mouth harp, known for its resonance, highlights the ancient musical traditions of Asia.
Bakiya Azamat, a master of the mouth harp, spoke to Anadolu about Kazakhstan’s diverse musical heritage.
“Kazakhstan boasts a rich musical heritage with over 1,600 instruments, many of which are shared among Turkic states,” Azamat said. He described the mouth knob, a wind instrument, noting its ease of sound production but challenging playability.
Azamat also shared a cultural anecdote: in early Kazakh tradition, newlyweds were often gifted a harp. “When the bride felt homesick, she would play the harp to express her emotions and longing for home,” he added.
The World Nomad Games, held every two years since 2014, not only feature traditional music but also include traditional sports such as horseback riding, wrestling, and hunting.
This year’s event is themed “Uly Dala dubiri,” meaning “Gathering in the Great Steppe,” reflecting the spirit of Kazakhstan’s nomadic past.
