Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and US President Donald Trump are expected to meet Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, ahead of Trump’s summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, local media reported Friday.

The Japanese and US governments are making arrangements for the talks as Tokyo seeks to coordinate its position with Washington on China before Trump meets Xi on Thursday in the US, according to Kyodo News.

Japan has been seeking talks with Trump amid concerns in Tokyo over the direction of US-China relations, particularly on Taiwan and regional security.

Tuesday’s talks would mark at least the fourth in-person meeting between Takaichi and Trump since she became prime minister in October 2025.

Their first face-to-face summit was held in Tokyo on Oct. 28, 2025, during Trump’s visit to Japan.

They met again at the White House on March 19 and held a brief discussion on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France in June.

The two leaders have also held at least four publicly announced phone talks since Takaichi took office, including calls in October and November 2025, and January and May this year.

During their May call, Trump briefed Takaichi on his talks with Xi, after the US president visited Beijing, while the two exchanged views on China, economic security, and regional security.
