Italian football’s surprise package Atalanta top Serie A division after win at Parma

Italian football’s surprise package Atalanta topped the Serie A division after a 3-1 win Saturday at Parma.

Atalanta drew first blood at the Ennio Tardini Stadium as Italian forward Mateo Retegui scored an early goal against Parma.

Retegui has netted 12 goals this season to be the top scorer in the Serie A.

Brazil midfielder Ederson doubled the lead for Atalanta before the break.

Parma’s Matteo Cancellieri narrowed the gap to one in the early minutes of the second half but Atalanta’s Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman scored for the visitors in the 75th minute to cement the victory.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta, which secured their seventh straight win in the Italian league, have 28 points in 13 matches.

Title contenders Inter Milan hammered Hellas Verona 5-0 as Marcus Thuram scored twice Saturday for the away team.

Defending champions Inter has 28 points and are second in the Serie A standings.

Napoli, which are now third with 26 points, will host Roma on Sunday.

Juventus, meanwhile, drew with AC Milan 0-0 at Milan’s San Siro Stadium on Saturday.

Sixth-place Juventus have 25 points and is one of the title contenders in Italy. Milan have 19 points in the seventh position in the league.
