Iraq’s top court terminates parliament speaker’s membership

BAGHDAD

The Federal Supreme Court of Iraq on Tuesday terminated the membership of the parliament speaker and a rival lawmaker.

The court in a statement announced the decision to revoke the membership of Mohamed Al-Halbousi and Sunni lawmaker Laith al-Dulaimi, but did not elaborate on reasons of the decision.

Halbousi was re-elected as the speaker of the parliament last year.

The move comes ahead of provincial elections Dec. 18.
