Iraq’s Najaf International Airport suspended all flights to and from Iran on Friday until further notice, citing directives from authorities.
“Based on official directives issued by the competent authorities, it has been decided to suspend all incoming and outgoing flights to and from the Islamic Republic of Iran starting at 2 a.m. Friday (2300GMT Thursday), Sept. 25, 2026, until further notice,” the airport administration said in a statement carried by the state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The airport urged relevant parties to take the necessary measures and notify airlines and other operators, adding that any decision to resume flights would be announced officially.
The suspension comes after Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization announced Tuesday that flights from Tehran to Baghdad and Muscat, Oman, would be canceled beginning early Wednesday.
The developments also follow remarks by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday that operations by Iranian airlines worldwide would come to a halt as of Sept. 23 as part of sanctions imposed on Iran.
