Inter Milan beat Atalanta 4-0, extend lead atop Italian league

ANKARA

A confident Inter Milan beat Atalanta 4-0 in a Wednesday match to extend their lead atop the Italian Serie A division.

The home win enabled Inter to go 12 points clear of second-place Juventus, who have 57 points in 26 matches. Inter have won all eight of their league games so far this year and are in pursuit of a 20th Serie A title. The Nerazzurri last won the domestic title in 2021.

Italian right-back Matteo Darmian scored the opener for Inter at Milan’s Giuseppe Meazza Stadium.

Nerazzurri captain Lautaro Martinez fired outside the area as Inter doubled the lead in injury time.

Federico Dimarco, an Italian left-back, made it 3-0 in the 54th minute after Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi saved Martinez’s penalty.

Midfielder Davide Frattesi scored a header in the near post to seal the 4-0 victory.

Inter will next host Genoa in a Monday league match.

Juventus will visit defending Italian champions Napoli in a tough match on Sunday.

Earlier Wednesday, Napoli hammered Sassuolo 6-1 as the visitors’ Nigerian star Victor Osimhen made a hat-trick and Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored double in Reggio Emilia.
