Indonesian president’s son to vie for vice-president’s seat in elections

ISTANBUL

Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s son on Wednesday officially registered with the nation’s poll body as a vice-presidential candidate for next year’s general election.

Indonesia’s Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto,72, will run as a presidential candidate and Widodo’s son Gibran Rakabuming Raka, 36, as a vice-presidential candidate from the Advanced Indonesia Coalition, Jakarta-based Kompass TV reported.

The party supports Prabowo and Gibran to lead the nation and advance Indonesia, said the general chair of the party.

Prabowo and Gibran are the third candidate pair to register with the election commission, following Anies Baswedan and Muhaimin Iskandar, as well as Ganjar Pranowo and Mahfud MD, who registered on Thursday.

The world’s third-largest democracy will hold simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections next year.
