India to expand nuclear capacity by 13,800 megawatts by 2032

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) announced plans on Monday to significantly bolster the country’s nuclear energy capacity by adding 18 more reactors with a total capacity of 13,800 megawatts by the year 2032.

The expansion plan is set to elevate India’s nuclear power capacity to 22,480 megawatts, NPCIL said.

According to a company statement, the expansion includes eight reactors currently under construction with a combined capacity of 6,800 megawatts and an additional 10 reactors with a capacity of 7,000 megawatts, now in the pre-project stages.

The announcement came on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) in Gujarat, which houses the country’s largest indigenous pressurized heavy water reactors.

It also came after the fourth unit of KAPS was connected to the western power grid on Feb. 20.
