Independiente del Valle beat Flamengo to win Recopa Sudamericana

ANKARA

Independiente del Valle won the 2023 CONMEBOL Recopa Sudamericana (Cup Winners’ Cup) by beating Flamengo in the final’s second leg with penalties on Wednesday.

After Del Valle beat the Brazilian team 1-0 in the first leg last week, Flamengo beat the Ecuadorian side with Giorgian de Arrascaeta’s late goal to level the series at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

The tie did not break in extra time, and the match went to a penalty shootout.

The Ecuadorians won 5-4 on penalties, and clinched the Recopa Sudamericana trophy for the first time.

The Recopa Sudamericana, an annual international club football competition organized by CONMEBOL since 1988, is a trophy game held between the champions of the previous year’s Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana, South America’s top-tier club competitions.
