Rising housing costs are putting a heavy burden on Greek households, which are already struggling with significant increases in food and energy prices, a report by Eurostat revealed Thursday.
The highest housing cost overburden rates in cities were observed in Greece at 32.4%, Denmark at 21.9%, and the Netherlands at 15.3%.
According to Eurostat, the housing cost overburden rate is the percentage of the population living in households where the total housing costs including rent, utilities, heating, and water supply represent more than 40% of disposable income.
Similarly, Greece also ranks first in terms of the overburden rates in rural areas.
As such, it is 22.0% in Greece, compared to Bulgaria’s 13.3% and Romania’s 10.8 %.
