August 6, 2025 4:00 pmGerman Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) unveiled a roadmap to reduce import dependence on individual countries for permanent magnets, which are crucial components in making wind turbines efficient and reliable.
More than 90% of the European Union’s (EU) permanent magnets are produced in China, with this dependency extending across the whole value chain.
EU has adopted the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA) to boost European clean tech manufacturing. The published “resilience roadmap” aims to systematically reduce Europe’s dependency on individual third countries.
The plan sets targets to source 30% of permanent magnets from alternative suppliers by 2030 and 50% by 2035.
Permanent magnet generators make wind turbines more efficient, more compact, and require less maintenance, especially in the offshore sector. They are key to reliable and economical power generation, says BMWE.
The roadmap also includes timelines for European wind turbine manufacturers to identify potential alternative suppliers of permanent magnets and sign official Memoranda of Understanding with them, secure offtake agreements, and develop resilient production capacities.
