Borussia Dortmund’s German defender Mats Hummels on Wednesday renewed his contract until 2024.

“Borussia Dortmund and defender Mats Hummels on Wednesday morning agreed to extend the player’s contract, which was set to expire on 30 June, by another year,” the German Bundesliga club said in a statement.

Hans-Joachim Watzke, the Borussia Dortmund CEO, said he is “really happy” to keep the 34-year-old at the Signal Iduna Park.

“He (Hummels) identifies strongly with our club. BVB and Mats simply belong together,” Watzke said.

“Everyone knows how much fun it is for me to play at Signal Iduna Park with our fantastic fans. I didn’t make the decision easy for myself. There was a long weighing-up process. Now, at the end of the season, I can say: I’m still really up for another year,” Hummels said.

He added that the team has focused on the German Bundesliga’s final weekend against Mainz on Saturday as last weekend leaders Borussia Dortmund moved two points clear of defending champions Bayern Munich.

“We still have 90 intense minutes ahead of us. After that, we hope to celebrate something big together,” the experienced central defender said.

Hummels, the 2014 FIFA World Cup winner with the German national team, represented Borussia Dortmund in 468 matches and scored 34 goals.

He won the Bundesliga title for six times in total, two of them with Dortmund in 2011 and 2012.

He also helped Bayern Munich win the German top-tier league in 2008, 2017, 2018, and 2019.

He bagged 76 caps for Germany, and represented his nation in the 2014 and 2018 World Cup tournaments.
