Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Germany’s “unwavering solidarity” in its war with Russia.

In a phone call, Zelenskyy briefed Scholz on recent Russian attacks on critical Ukrainian infrastructure, according to government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit.

He thanked the German government for its decision to send a Patriot anti-aircraft missile battery and Marder armored personnel carriers, the spokesman said.

Both leaders agreed to continue their constructive exchanges, including on Ukraine’s proposals for a peaceful resolution, Hebestreit added.

Last year, Germany spent over €12 billion ($12.76 billion) to support Ukraine and has said it will continue with a similar amount for 2023.

Germany has supplied Ukraine with weapons and military equipment worth €2.25 billion ($2.38 billion) since the war began on Feb. 24, including self-propelled howitzers, Gepard anti-aircraft tanks, and the Iris-T anti-aircraft system, which can protect an entire city.

In terms of absolute spending, Germany ranks ahead of France, but behind both the UK and Poland.
