Frank van den Broek wins 59th Presidential Cycling Tour of Türkiye

ISTANBUL

Frank van den Broek of the Dsm-Firmenich PostNL won the 59th Presidential Cycling Tour of Türkiye on Sunday.

The Dutch cyclist became the overall winner of the Tour of Türkiye with a time of 25 hours, 53 minutes, and nine seconds.

“Due to the slippery condition of the roads (due to rain in Istanbul), it’s been decided that stage 8 will be neutralized,” Tour of Türkiye said in a statement.

“The peloton will ride the planned route but only one lap instead of 5 and will proceed to Sultanahmet with the distinctive jersey holders at the front of the peloton,” it added.

The 23-year-old Broek became the first-ever Dutch winner of the Presidential Cycling Tour of Türkiye.

Merhawi Kudus of the Terengganu team came in second while Paul Double of the Polti Kometa team was third.

In a statement, Tour of Türkiye said there was no stage winner on Sunday and the prize money for this stage would be donated to a charity.

Van den Broek clinched the Turquoise jersey as an overall leader and his teammate Tobias Andresen from Denmark bagged the Green jersey as a sprint race winner.

Bike Aid’s Vinzent Dorn from Germany sealed the red jersey for leading the climbing classification and the white jersey for beating the Türkiye Beauties classification.

Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team finished first in the teams’ general classification.

The Tour of Türkiye, the only intercontinental bicycle tour in the world, hosted four world tour teams, seven professional, 12 continental, and one national team.

The Turkish Cycling Federation has been organizing the tour, earlier known as the Marmara Tour, since 1963. It gained international status in 1965 and was brought under presidential authority in 1966.
