Fenerbahce retake lead in Turkish league before Besiktas derby

ANKARA

Fenerbahce retook the top spot in Türkiye’s Trendyol Super Lig on Monday ahead of this weekend’s derby with Besiktas.

The Yellow Canaries beat EMS Yapi Sivasspor 4-1 in a Super Lig match at home to lead the domestic football league on goal difference.

Leaders Fenerbahce and second-place Galatasaray have 37 points each in 14 matches to be in a relentless title race.

Galatasaray on Saturday beat Siltas Yapi Pendikspor 2-0 in an away match.

Fenerbahce have a 27-goal difference while Galatasaray have 20 in 14 weeks.

At Istanbul’s Ulker Stadium, Fenerbahce led the first half against Sivasspor 2-0 after Sebastian Szymanski finished in the box and Irfan Can Kahveci curled a classy shot into the far corner.

In the early minutes of the second half, Sivasspor reduced the gap to one. After a long ball, Sivasspor forward Rey Manaj put the ball into the net for the visitors.

Fenerbahce extended the gap to three goals after Bosnian forward Edin Dzeko scored double in the 68th and 75th minutes, making it 4-1.

In their next fixture, Fenerbahce will visit archrivals Besiktas on Saturday, a critical match that can shape the league’s summit.

Besiktas have 26 points to be third in the league table.

The Black Eagles are 11 points behind Fenerbahce and Galatasaray.

On Friday, Galatasaray will host fifth-place Yukatel Adana Demirspor at RAMS Park.
