EuroLeague suspends games in Türkiye due to earthquakes

ANKARA

The Turkish Airlines EuroLeague announced Monday that it has decided to suspend several basketball games in Türkiye due to powerful earthquakes there that left thousands dead and injured and caused massive destruction.

The league said that regular season Round 24 games between Anadolu Efes and Real Madrid and Fenerbahce Beko and EA7 Emporio Armani Exchange Milan which were scheduled to be played on Feb. 9 and 10, respectively, have been suspended following the Turkish government’s cancellation of all sports competitions until further notice due to the earthquakes.

A 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season Round 14 game between Frutti Extra Bursaspor and Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse which was scheduled to be played on Feb. 8 has also been suspended.

The league added that it will evaluate the best possible options with the affected teams to reschedule the games based on available dates and further information will be released in the coming days.

Early in the morning, a magnitude 7.7 quake struck Türkiye’s southern Kahramanmaras province. Then a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Kahramanmaras in the afternoon, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD).

At least 2,379 people were killed and 14,483 others were injured in 10 provinces of Türkiye due to the two strong earthquakes, said Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay. ​​​​​​​
