Danish cyclist Vingegaard wins Stage 16 at Tour de France

ANKARA

Jumbo-Visma’s Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard won Stage 16 of the Tour de France on Tuesday to carry on his lead in the general ranking of the prestigious cycling competition.

Vingegaard, the 2022 Tour de France champion, beat his nearest rival Tadej Pogacar in the 22.4-kilometer (13.9-mile) individual time-trial stage, winning it in a time of 32 minutes and 36 seconds between Passy and Combloux.

Slovenia’s Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), who was the 2020 and 2021 champion, came in second, ending the stage a minute and 38 seconds after Vingegaard.

In the general ranking of the Tour, the gap between leader Vingegaard and second-place Pogacar is now a minute and 48 seconds.

Pogacar’s teammate Adam Yates from Britain was placed third in the general ranking as he is trailing eight minutes and 52 seconds behind Vingegaard.

The Tour will resume with Stage 17 on Wednesday as the athletes will pedal on a 165.7-kilometer (102.9-mile) mountain track between Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc and Courchevel, a French Alps ski resort.

The world’s most prestigious cycling race will end on July 23 on Paris’ Champs-Elysees after Stage 21.

1. Jonas Vingegaard (Denmark): 63 hours, 6 minutes and 53 seconds

2. Tadej Pogacar (Slovenia): +1 minute and 48 seconds

3. Adam Yates (Britain): +8 minutes and 52 seconds
