Patrik Schick scored a second-half goal as Czech Republic secured a 1-1 draw with tournament debutants Georgia in a Saturday UEFA EURO 2024 group match in Germany’s Hamburg.
Georgia scored the opener just before halftime as Georges Mikautadze successfully converted a penalty.
However, Czech Republic leveled the game in the 59th minute as Bayer Leverkusen forward Schick scored with his chest after a rebound off the post.
Following the equalizer, the Czechs dominated the second half and pushed for a winner. Georgia were looking for counter attacks in Saturday’s thriller.
Czech Republic created many chances in the final half but were unable to beat Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who was named man of the match.
Mamardashvili made nine saves during the match at Volksparkstadion.
Georgia had one last chance on a quick counter attack before the final whistle but Saba Lobjanidze missed a one-on-one chance, sending the ball over the bar.
Willy Sagnol’s Georgia won their first-ever EURO point with the match, which resulted in both them and Czech Republic holding a single point each in Group F.
Meanwhile, Türkiye and Portugal are facing each other on Saturday in Dortmund for the group’s top spot. Both Türkiye and Portugal won their openers in the same group.
The third and final matchday of Group F will see the Georgia vs. Portugal, and Czech Republic vs. Türkiye matches on June 26.
