European Commissioner Ylva Johansson said Thursday that the Czech Republic could be exempted from any mandatory solidarity contributions to the EU on migration.
Johansson’s remarks came ahead of a debate in the Czech Parliament on EU migration.
“Let’s be clear: The rules agreed in the Pact on Migration and Asylum do not call for mandatory relocation, even in crisis,” she said on X.
Underscoring that what is required is mandatory solidarity — financially or operationally, she added that member states would have some flexibility.
“A country like Czech Republic, who already showed solidarity by hosting large numbers of Ukrainians, will be able to be exempted from any mandatory solidarity contributions,” she said.
