Team USA, the favorite to win gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics, dominated Puerto Rico 104-83 on Saturday and will face Brazil in the men’s basketball quarterfinals next week.
Guard Anthony Edwards, who plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA, scored a game-high 26 points in the win at Lille’s
Pierre Mauroy Stadium.
Joel Embiid put in 15 points, Kevin Durant scored 11 points and LeBron James, Jayson Tatum and Anthony Davis each racked up 10 points for the star-studded American team.
Jose Alvarado, who plays guard for the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans, led Puerto Rico with 18 points.
Team USA won Group C with a flawless run in Paris, and will play Brazil, which finished their group in third place. The teams will meet Tuesday at Paris’ Bercy Arena.
In the other Group C match, Serbia beat South Sudan 96-85 and will meet Australia in a last eight game at Bercy Arena on Tuesday.
Hosts France will face Canada, and Germany will take on Greece on Tuesday in the last eight.
Spain beat Serbia in women’s basketball
The Spanish women’s national basketball team beat Serbia 70-62 at Pierre Mauroy Stadium to win Group A with three victories.
Spain and Serbia have already qualified for the quarterfinals.
Spanish small forward Maria Conde scored 15 points to lead all scorers.
Serbian point guard Yvonne Anderson had 18 points.
Serbia finished the group stage in the second spot with two wins and a loss.
Another Group A team, China, won against underdogs Puerto Rico to keep their last eight chances alive. China are third at 1-2 in the group.
Puerto Rico, which lost all three games, have been eliminated from the tournament.
Dominican Republic clinch QF spot after stunning Netherlands in women’s volleyball
The Dominican Republic booked a spot in the women’s volleyball quarterfinals at the Paris Games with a 3-1 win against the Netherlands at South Paris Arena 1.
The team from the Caribbean won the four-set match 22-25, 25-21, 25-17, 28-26, in the country’s first win at the Paris Olympics to march into the knockouts.
The Dominican Republic ended Pool C in the third position at 1-2.
The Netherlands, however, was eliminated after three defeats.
Italy and Türkiye are vying for the pool’s top position as both are 2-0.
The Italy vs. Türkiye showdown will be held early Sunday.
In the other match, Japan beat Kenya 3-0. but both teams have been eliminated.
Lorenzo Musetti wins bronze medal in tennis
Italian tennis player Lorenzo Musetti won the men’s singles bronze medal.
Musetti, 22, beat Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 at Paris’ Court Philippe-Chatrier to finish in the third spot and snag his first Olympic medal in his career.
Novak Djokovic will face Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday in the gold medal match.
