April 22, 2026 11:19 amAround 72% of energy projects currently under construction worldwide are clean sources, underscoring the accelerating global shift toward low-carbon power, according to data from the Global Energy Monitor.
Renewable and nuclear energy projects are gaining prominence as countries prioritize climate action and energy security. Low-carbon energy sources have become a strategic focus in national policies, driving a steady increase in investments.
Globally, energy projects with a combined capacity of 1,639 GW are currently under construction. Of this total, clean energy projects make up about 1,175 GW.
Solar leads clean investments with 444 GW under development, followed by hydropower at 326 GW, wind at 314 GW, and nuclear at 82 GW.
The smallest shares among projects under construction are in biomass, with 7 GW, and geothermal energy, with just 2 GW.
– Asia dominates clean energy construction
Countries seeking to strengthen resilience against energy crises are increasingly prioritizing domestic and sustainable resources, supported by economic and geopolitical considerations.
Asia accounts for 84.5% of all clean energy projects under construction, with 993 gigawatts of renewable and nuclear capacity being built across the region.
Home to some of the world’s fastest-growing energy markets, the region’s planned capacity additions and strategic investments reinforce its leadership in the global energy transition.
The Americas follow with 63 GW of clean energy projects under construction, while Europe has 56 GW underway. Africa accounts for 55 GW, and Oceania for 8 GW of clean energy projects.
While, global installed power capacity stands at approximately 8,573 gigawatts (GW).
Oil and natural gas plants account for the largest share at 2,233 GW, followed by coal at 2,203 GW and hydropower at 1,279 GW.
Solar energy capacity stands at 1,197 GW, while wind capacity stands at 1,129 GW. Nuclear energy accounts for 401 GW, followed by bioenergy at 115 GW and geothermal at 16 GW.
