Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China and the United Kingdom offer development opportunities to each other and hoped that the British side will establish a correct understanding of China, state-run media reported.
Speaking with British Foreign Secretary David Cameron on Tuesday for the first time since his appointment as the top British diplomat last month, Wang said: “China is firmly committed to peaceful development, and maintains continuity and stability of its foreign policy. China advocates multilateralism and opposes unilateral bullying.”
Beijing supports free trade and opposes protectionism, Xinhua News quoted Wang as saying.
The two top diplomats also discussed the Ukraine crisis over the phone and Wang reiterated Beijing’s consistent position on promoting peace talks, and stressed opposition to any act that harms China’s legitimate rights and interests and abuses unilateral sanctions, according to the report.
On his part, Cameron said that he also discussed the Gaza situation with his Chinese counterpart.
“We discussed our intention to have a constructive relationship, the situation in Israel and Gaza, and Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. The UK will continue to engage with China where it furthers our interests,” he said on X.
