Chelsea hire Frank Lampard for rest of season

ANKARA

English Premier League club Chelsea on Thursday appointed Frank Lampard as a caretaker manager until the end of the 2022-23 season.

“Chelsea FC has announced that Frank Lampard has been named Caretaker Manager until the end of the season,” the London club said in a statement.

“The move marks a return to Stamford Bridge for Frank who enjoyed an illustrious playing career with the Blues, winning the Premier League on three occasions and the UEFA Champions League in Munich. He managed the club for 84 games, including guiding us to an FA Cup final.”

Lampard, a former Chelsea midfielder, coached the Blues from July 2019 until January 2021 as well.

The 44-year-old was one of the integral parts of Chelsea between 2001 and 2014 to win three English Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League title each as a player.

Lampard also coached Premier League club Everton for about a year. He arrived at Goodison Park in January 2022, but was let go this January.

After poor results in the league, Chelsea on Sunday sacked English manager Graham Potter, who was in charge for seven months.

Mid-table Chelsea have 39 points in the Premier League led by their city rivals Arsenal, who have 72 points in 29 matches.

Chelsea, however, progressed to the Champions League quarterfinals. Lampard’s men will take on reigning champions Real Madrid on April 12 in Spain, and April 18 in England.
