British energy major bp has agreed to buy Australia-based Woodside Energy’s 70% stake in the Calypso gas project offshore Trinidad and Tobago, the company said Thursday.
The deal will increase bp’s interest in the early-stage project to 100% and make it the operator, the company said in a statement.
Calypso could also benefit from bp’s existing operations and energy infrastructure in Trinidad and Tobago, it added.
The company is the largest supplier of natural gas to the country’s domestic market and holds a 45% interest in the Atlantic LNG facility on Trinidad’s southwest coast.
Gordon Birrell, bp’s executive vice president for upstream, said: “By building on the strengths of our existing operations and infrastructure, we have the potential to unlock new production and support long-term growth in the region.”
The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026, pending government and regulatory approvals.
