German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund and Spanish La Liga club Atletico Madrid reached the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Dortmund beat Dutch side PSV Eindhoven 2-0 at home to secure a last-eight place with a 3-1 aggregate victory.
English midfielder Jadon Sancho in the third minute and German veteran Marco Reus in the 95th minute both scored at Signal Iduna Park to bring vital victory to the hosts.
Atletico win hard-fought Round of 16 battle
Spanish La Liga side Atletico Madrid eliminated Italian Serie A powerhouse Inter Milan 3-2 on penalties after the match ended 2-2 on aggregate on Wednesday.
When Inter Milan defender Federico Dimarco netted in the 33rd minute to make the aggregate 2-0 in the Italian side’s favor, Inter fans were confident of a win.
Then Atletico attacker Antoine Griezmann responded in kind just two minutes later, but the hosts were still one goal behind at Metropolitano Stadium.
Dutch attacker Memphis Depay came to Atletico’s rescue with a goal in the 87th minute to carry the match to extra time.
When the score remained unchanged, the match went to a penalty shootout and ended with Inter’s Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez missing the last penalty.
The UEFA Champions League quarterfinal, semifinal and final draws will be held in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday.
