Boca Juniors won the 2022 Argentine Primera Division after settling for a 2-2 draw with Independiente on Sunday.

Boca owed their title win to the 2-1 victory of their arch rivals River Plate against league runner-up Racing Club, which played at the same time as Boca.

Leandro Miguel Fernandez drew the first blood for Independiente in the 32nd minute at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires.

Two minutes later, Guillermo Matias Fernandez of Boca leveled the score and the first half ended 1-1.

Sebastian Villa brought the lead to Boca in the 50th minute but Javier Nicolas Vallejo of Independiente equalized the score again in the 81st minute.

Boca’s title win was not certain, until rivals River Plate’s Miguel Borja netted a late winner in the 95th minute against Racing Club.

The reigning champions River Plate’s win created a 2-point margin between Boca Juniors and league runners-up Racing that ensured Boca’s title victory.

Boca Juniors raised their points to 52, while runners-up Racing were left with 50 points. River Plate have 47 points in Argentine Primera Division standings.
