Belgian premier reiterates solidarity with Türkiye after Feb. 6 quakes

BRUSSELS

The Belgian prime minister has reiterated the country’s solidarity with Türkiye following the devastating twin quakes on Feb.6.

Stressing Belgium’s long-term commitment to the recovery of Türkiye after the quakes, Alexander De Croo said the Belgian field hospital in the quake-stricken southern Hatay province is still operational and continues to treat people, during a fast-breaking dinner organized on Monday by the Muslim community in Brussels on the occasion of Laylat ul-Qadr — one of the most important dates in the Muslim religious calendar.

“We will rebuild. We will rebuild a strong community,” he added.

Belgium is a diverse country, De Croo noted, saying the presence of different beliefs and nationalities are among what makes the country stronger.

“This requires us to be open, understanding toward differences,” he said, adding: “This is also what is right and human.”

De Croo also noted that the Muslim community, with its values, is part of Belgian society.

He also expressed pleasure over the conversations he had with young Muslims during the night.

“They are ambitious. They have plans and dreams for the future of the country. They aspire to create a difference,” De Croo said.

On Feb. 6, magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 quakes struck 11 Turkish provinces, taking over 50,000 lives.

Around 14 million people in Türkiye have been affected by the quakes, as well as many others in northern Syria.
