Bayern Munich condemn racist comments directed at Upamecano on social media

ANKARA

Bayern Munich condemned on Thursday racist comments being directed towards their French defender Dayot Upamecano on social media after the team’s Champions League Round of 16 loss to Lazio.

“FC Bayern strongly condemn the racist comments being directed towards Dayot Upamecano on social media. Anyone who comments hateful words such as these is no fan of our club. We’re all behind you, Upa!” the German Bundesliga side said on X.

Upamecano was sent off in the 67th minute after conceding a penalty, which Ciro Immobile scored for the win.

Numerous racist comments were then left on the 25-year-old’s Instagram page.

Due to the red card, Upamecano will miss the second leg in Munich on March 5.

The 11-time consecutive Bundesliga champions are going through a difficult period this season. They fell five points behind their biggest rivals, Bayer Leverkusen, after losing 3-0 on Saturday.
