Atletico Madrid beat 10-man Real Madrid 2-1 at home Sunday in the seventh week of LaLiga.
The derby was goalless at halftime before Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen was sent off in the 52nd minute for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Atletico Madrid were awarded a penalty following the dismissal, and Alejandro Grimaldo converted from the spot a minute later to put the hosts ahead.
Jonathan David doubled Atletico’s lead in the 59th minute before Antonio Rudiger pulled one back for Real Madrid in the 89th.
Atletico held on for the victory to move to 16 points, climbing to second place on the leaderboard, while Real Madrid stayed at 15 points and fell six points behind leaders Barcelona.
Türkiye international Arda Guler started for Real Madrid before being substituted in the 54th minute.
