Atletico Madrid at top of Spanish La Liga table after comeback win against Barcelona

Norwegian forward Alexander Sorloth scored an injury-time winner as Atletico Madrid had a comeback win against Barcelona, 2-1, in a Saturday match to top the Spanish La Liga table.

Barcelona drew first blood at home at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium as Spanish midfielder Pedri exchanged passes with Gavi before finishing in the penalty area.

Following a mistake by midfielder Marc Casado, Atletico Madrid’s Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul scored the equalizer for the visitors at the hour mark.

Near the end of the match, unmarked Sorloth scored the winning goal f on a quick counterattack to upset Barcelona.

Atletico Madrid are now the leaders of the Spanish league as they increased their points to 41 in 18 matches. They will end 2024 in the top position.

Barcelona, which played 19 matches in the league, are second with 38 points.

Third-place Real Madrid can leapfrog Barcelona in the La Liga table if the Whites beat Sevilla at home on Sunday.

Real Madrid have 37 points in 17 matches.
