Amazon, Engie sign renewable energy deal in Scotland

Tech giant Amazon signed an agreement with France-based global energy group Engie on Tuesday, boosting its share of output from the Ocean Winds’ offshore wind farm in Scotland to 473 megawatts (MW).

“Located in the Moray Firth in the northeast of Scotland, the 882 MW wind farm is currently under construction and will generate power in 2024,” Engie’s statement read.

Ocean Winds, a joint venture owned by EDP Renewables and Engie focusing on offshore wind, is accelerating its development plan, with capacity from the site supporting Amazon’s goal to run entirely on renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of schedule, the statement added.

Commenting on the deal, Paulo Almirante, Engie’s senior executive vice president of Renewables & Energy Management, said: “Moray West reflects our strategy to accelerate the transition towards a carbon-neutral world through investing in renewable generation technologies.”

Last year, the France-based global energy group signed 19 ground-breaking deals spanning five countries, covering over 1 gigawatt of clean energy capacity.
