Alcaraz, Rublev win their opening matches at French Open

ANKARA

World no. 3 men’s tennis player Carlos Alcaraz and sixth seed Andrey Rublev qualified for the second round of the 2024 French Open (Roland Garros) as the tournament started on Sunday.

Spain’s Alcaraz beat his US opponent Jeffrey John Wolf with straight sets of 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 in a first round match at Court Philippe-Chatrier in Paris

Alcaraz will next face Dutch player Jesper De Jong.

Russia’s Rublev won against Japan’s Taro Daniel with sets of 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the second round, where he will play Pedro Martinez of Spain.

In women’s singles, Japan’s Naomi Osaka, who won four Grand Slam titles, qualified for the second round after beating her Italian opponent Lucia Bronzetti with sets of 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.

Osaka will next face either Polish top seed Iga Swiatek or French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean in the next stage.

Swiatek, 22, is a four-time Grand Slam champion in women’s singles and won the French Open in 2020, 2022 and 2023.

The 2024 French Open will run through June 9.
