Air fares in UK soared by 44% in December 2022

LONDON

Plane ticket prices in the UK recorded an annual rise of 44.1% in December 2022, the highest increase seen since the end of the 1980s, official figures showed.

The country’s statistical department said demand and higher fuel prices were the main reasons for the fare rises.

Meanwhile, train ticket prices also increased by 17.5% in December, as strikes over pay disputes possibly increased demand.

Prices of public transport by road also increased by 11.3% over the same period.

The annual inflation rate in the UK slowed to 10.5% last month, from 10.7% in November.
