ANKARA
Turkish Trade Minister Omer Bolat is traveling to the US on Wednesday to attend the G20 trade ministers’ meeting and the Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity (GFSEC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The two-day summit, hosted under the American G20 presidency, will gather trade ministers at a time when world trade is navigating fragmentation risks and geopolitical tensions.
The agenda will focus on combating the weaponization of food supplies via coercive trade decisions, eliminating forced labor within global supply chains and addressing structural production overcapacity.
The event will also involve talks on potential updates to the most-favored-nation (MFN) principle, which has served as a foundational pillar of the multilateral trading system.
Participating ministers will outline their national policies on these agenda items and explore strategies to boost global economic cooperation.
Meanwhile, the GFSEC will address chronic overproduction issues that have consistently strained the global metals trade.
The forum will evaluate the multifaceted economic impact of market excesses and involve talks to determine actionable steps to resolve the root causes of industrial overcapacity.
Bolat will express Ankara’s strategic perspectives and specific concerns over the proposed changes to global trade at the gathering, according to the Turkish Trade Ministry.
The minister will also hold a series of bilateral meetings with senior representatives from the US, the EU, Canada, the UK, Poland, South Korea and Saudi Arabia on the sidelines of the G20 summit.
The diplomatic talks will constitute a platform for officials to evaluate ongoing bilateral economic initiatives and track the progress of mutual trade deals while providing Türkiye with a dedicated stage to address geopolitical and commercial issues currently dominating its mutual agenda with key global partners.
