ISTANBUL
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan attended a meeting of the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement with his Saudi and Pakistani counterparts, where they discussed the process of institutionalizing the deal, according to diplomatic sources on Friday.
As part of the foreign ministers meeting of the agreement on Thursday, Fidan held talks with Saudi Arabia’s Faisal bin Farhan and Pakistan’s Mohammad Ishaq Dar in New York, where he is attending the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
The meeting addressed the latest progress in the ongoing technical-level negotiations aimed at institutionalizing cooperation under the agreement.
The ministers also discussed preparations for the next meeting of the Strategic Political and Defense Committee, which is planned to take place in the coming period, the sources said.
Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan signed the defense agreement in August at a trilateral summit in Mecca, pledging to strengthen collective security, deepen defense cooperation, and promote peace and stability in the region and beyond.
Separately, Fidan met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty in New York, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a post on NSosyal, a Turkish social media platform.
No further details on the meeting were provided by officials.
