NEW DELHI

The death toll from a boiler explosion at a power plant in India’s central Chhattisgarh state rose to 20 on Wednesday, officials announced.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in Singhitarai village in Sakti district when a boiler tube exploded at a Vedanta Ltd. power plant, leaving multiple workers dead and more than a dozen others injured.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said initial reports confirmed 11 deaths, but the toll increased during recovery operations on Wednesday.

“A high-level inquiry will be done and strict action will be taken if anyone is found guilty,” he told reporters in Raipur.

Senior police official Praful Thakur said the death toll had risen to 20, while 16 injured people were receiving treatment in hospitals.

India is no stranger to industrial incidents, often caused by poor safety standards and lax regulations.
