Swiss Belinda Bencic reached the women’s singles 4th round of the 2025 Australian Open as Japanese Naomi Osaka retired due to an injury on Friday.
The 2019 and 2021 champion Osaka was forced to retire after 58 minutes due to an abdominal strain after losing the opening set on a tiebreak 7-3.
No. 3 seed Coco Gauff, who eliminated Canadian Leylah Fernandez with 6-4 6-2 straight sets, will be the opponent of Bencic in the next round.
Danilovic upsets world no.6 Pegula in 3th round
Serbian southpaw Olga Danilovic upset world no. 6 Jessica Pegula in the 3th round of women’s singles with 7-6(3) 6-1 sets on Friday.
“I’m super happy with the way I played,” said the 23-year-old victor, “She’s on top of the world. She’s such a great player. I knew I had to play my A, A, A, plus, plus, plus game to beat her.”
Danilovic will face Spanish no. 11 seed Paula Badosa in the 4th round.
Defending champion Sabalenka eliminates young Tauson
Two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus eliminated young Danish player Clara Tauson 7-6(5) 6-4 sets on Friday.
The 26-year-old marked her 17th successive Australian Open victory.
Sabalenka will take on Russian Mirra Andreeva in the next round.
Men’s 2nd seed Zverev easily overtakes Fearnley
Men’s second seed Alexander Zverev easily overtook Scot Jacob Fearnley with 6-3 6-4 6-4 straight sets in the round 3 on Friday.
27-year-old German marked his third successive match in straight sets.
Zverev will face French Ugo Humbert in the next round.
4-time Grand Slam winner Alcaraz eliminates Borges in men’s 3rd round
Four-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz eliminated Portuguese Nuno Borges in the men’s singles 3rd round on Friday.
The 21-year-old Spaniard said: “I tried [to] show my best tennis here. I’m just really happy with my level. I[‘m] just happy, and have things to improve in approaching the next match.”
Alcaraz will play with Brit Jack Draper in the 4th round.
10-time champion Djokovic hammers Machac
Ten-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic hammered Czech Tomas Machac with 6-1 6-4 6-4 straight sets in the men’s singles 3rd round on Friday.
“I’m very happy with my game. I was slightly surprised by the result, to win in straight sets,” the Serbian star said.
Djokovic will meet with another Czech player, Jiri Lehecka, in the 4th round.
