Mike Tyson still has it, even at the age of 53. Just ask the man who was catching the former champion’s punches in a recently released viral video.
“I saw a guy with the same speed, same power as guys 21, 22 years old,” trainer Rafael Cordeiro told ESPN.
Cordeiro, a trainer who specializes in mixed martial arts, said Tyson hadn’t hit the mitts in nearly a decade. He was stunned by the display. The two go back to the late 1980’s. They have been working out together the last few weeks, doing a little bit of everything in 60-to-90-minute sessions.
“Like I said before, 53 years old but when he puts his mind to it, his body inside the ring — he changes,” Cordeiro said.
Tyson said recently in an Instagram Live with rapper T.I. that he would like to fight some exhibition fights in the near future.
“I’ve been working out, I’ve been trying to get in the ring, I think I’m going to box some exhibitions and get in shape,” Tyson said. “I want to go to the gym and get in shape to be able to box three or four-round exhibitions for some charities and stuff. I do two hours on cardio, I do the bike and the treadmill for an hour, then I do some light weights, 300, 250 reps. Then I start my day with the boxing thing, I go in there and hit the mitts, 30 minutes, 25 minutes, start getting in better condition.”
Cordeiro thinks Tyson could return to the ring in six months if he continues the work they’ve been doing.
“I don’t know, but what I can tell you is that if he wants to do something in the future, we’ll be ready to do that, 100 percent,” he said.
“It’s not a joke,” Cordeiro added, and said the viral video was just a taste of what he saw up close. There is more video that will be released, and it shows ”more power, more speed, everything.”
