Some 3,000 teachers started a strike in Lithuania, local media reported on Friday.
Lithuanian Education Workers’ Trade Union (LSDPS), of which the striking teachers are members, has demanded that teachers’ salaries be increased by 20% as of this September and by another 30% as of January 2024 and that the number of students in classrooms and the teachers’ workload be reduced, according to state-run LRT news agency.
The union warned that the strike may continue for up to a month.
On Sep.22, the education ministry announced that an agreement had been reached with four teachers’ trade unions. LSDPS was the only union that didn’t accept the ministry’s proposal of a 21% total increase for the next year.
