In New York, the Norwegian star lost the second-round game with the sets of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 0-6 and 6-2 on Grandstand.
The United States’ Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, and Tommy Paul, Serbia’s Laslo Djere, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina from Spain, and Adrian Mannarino of France also advanced to the next stage in men’s singles.
Meanwhile, Ben Shelton moved to the third round after Dominic Thiem’s withdrawal from the tournament.
The 2020 winner sustained an injury during the match.
In women’s singles, Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, the No. 4 seed, marched into the third round after Australian Ajla Tomljanovic withdrew before the clash.
Caroline Wozniacki, Belaruslu Victoria Azarenka, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Jelena Ostapenko, Sorana Cirstea, and Elise Mertens qualified for the next round.
