1 killed, 17 injured from Russian airstrikes in Zaporizhzhia: Ukraine

ISTANBUL

Ukraine said Thursday that at least one person was killed and 17 others were injured in Russian airstrikes in the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia.

Zaporizhzhia Gov. Ivan Fedorov said on Telegram that missiles and guided bombs struck five points in the region’s administrative capital, including residential buildings and hospitals.

“One person died, 10 were injured, including a one-year-old child. These are the preliminary consequences of the enemy (Russian) attack on Zaporizhzhia,” said Fedorov, indicating that two people, one of which is a medical worker, are in serious condition.

He later said the number injured increased to 17, three of which are children.

The city was also targeted Wednesday with a Russian airstrike that killed six and injured more than 20, according to authorities.

“Each of these Russian attacks not only kills people and devastates lives but also obliterates any words about the lack of conversations with Russia or some calls to the Kremlin,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on X.

Zelenskyy said protecting lives in Ukraine means the provision of more air defenses, as well as permitting Kyiv to carry out long-range strikes against Russia.

The Russian Defense Ministry said earlier that it damaged the infrastructure of a military airfield, as well as military warehouses and oil depots belonging to the Ukrainian army.

Moscow, however, has yet to comment on the attack on Zaporizhzhia.

Zaporizhzhia is located 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the front line with Moscow and has been frequently hit by airstrikes amid the Russia-Ukraine war, which has been ongoing for nearly 1,000 days.
