ISTANBUL
US stocks closed lower Thursday for the fourth consecutive day, with the Dow’s losses causing the blue-chip index to eventually give up all of its gains so far this year.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 286 points, or 0.86%, to finish the day at 33,127. The index is now in negative territory for the year to date.
The S&P 500 fell 29 points, or 0.72%, to end the session at 4,061. The Nasdaq decreased almost 59 points, or 0.49%, to 11,966.
The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 9.5% to 20.09. Meanwhile, the 10-year US Treasury yield fell 1% to 3.369%.
The dollar index rose 0.1% to 101.42, while the euro shed 0.4% to $1.1013 against the greenback.
Precious metals were on the rise, with gold adding 0.6% to $2,050 per ounce and silver soaring 1.9% to $26.05.
Oil prices reversed course to recoup previous losses with a 0.1% daily increase. The price of global benchmark Brent crude was at $72.53 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude at $68.65.
