A pre-design agreement was signed with US company Westinghouse for the first nuclear power plant planned to be established in Poland on Wednesday.
The ‘pre-design’ agreement was signed at a ceremony held with the participation of Polish Energy and Climate Minister Anna Moskwa and officials.
Moskwa said the preliminary agreement signed on Wednesday between the US Westinghouse Electric Company, Westinghouse Electric Poland, and Polish energy company Polskie Elektrownie is another important step in the construction of a nuclear power plant in Poland.
She conveyed that, within the scope of the preliminary design agreement, work will be carried out on the transfer and placement of technology from the US to Poland.
The funding for the plant will primarily come from the Treasury, although US financial participation is also a consideration.
‘The next agreement will be the most important design agreement, and we expect it to be signed this summer,’ she said.
‘This agreement will give us the impulse to develop clean, safe, and above all, our own energy. The construction of a nuclear power plant in Poland and cooperation with a stable, experienced partner are part of strengthening Polish-American cooperation,’ Moskwa said.
The government of Poland decided in November 2022 that Westinghouse would provide the technology for the first power plant under the country’s nuclear energy program.
The first nuclear power plant is scheduled to begin construction in 2026 and be completed in 2033.
As part of the Polish government’s energy strategy, six nuclear power units with a total capacity of 6 to 9 gigawatts will be built in the country.
